Månedens astronom: Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar (1910-1995)

- Født i Lahore, britisk Indien, 9 søskende, faderen officer, moderen intellektuel, oversatte Ibsens "Et dukkehjem"
- Undervist hjemme til 12 år
- 1918: Familien flyttede til Madras - Hindu High School til 1925
- Universitetsuddannelse 1925-30 - fysik, bachelor i juni 1930
- Regerings-stipeniat til studier i Cambridge, England, juli 1930 - Under Fowler (Spektroskopi-kvantemekanik-kerneprocesser i stjerner)
- På sejlturten fra Bombay til England beregnede han, at visse stjerner kunne ende deres liv ved at kollapse til et punkt. Sir Arthur Eddington - the grand old man of British astrophysics ( Påviste det krumme rum - solformørkelse 1919) - latterliggjorde straks ideen. Ingen turde støtte Chandra før Eddingtons død i 1944
- ph.d 1933.
- På anbefaling af P.A.M Dirac tilbragte han 3 år på "Niels Bohr Instituttet" i København.
- 1937 Inviteret til Havard University, Cambridge Massachusetts, af Harlow Shapley. Var her resten af livet!

- Kort sagt på dansk:
Fandt bl.a. den teoretiske grænsemasse for en hvid dværg. En stjerne, som har en masse der er større end 1,4 solmasser vil eksplodere som en supernova, mens kerneområdet kollapser til en neutronstjerne eller et sort hul. Det er bl.a. i supernovarester, at man observerer en intens röntgenstråling. Hvis restmassen er mindre, ender stjernen som en hvid dværg.
- Til Chandrasekhars ære er NASAs nye højtopløsningsröntgenteleskop kommet til at hedde CHANDRA.
